Police found £200k cannabis factory after ‘severe’ fire ravaged house on Smethwick High Street

A hidden cannabis factory was discovered by police after a fire ripped through a house in Smethwick.

Emergency services were called to the High Street where the first and second floor of a home were engulfed in flames.

A team of 20 firefighters tackled the blaze as officers shut down the roads surrounding the fire on Friday, January 22 at around midday.

Six rooms of the property were filled with cannabis plants with a street value of around £200,000.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “We were called at 11.40am on January 22 to a fire where a substantial cannabis factory was discovered in six rooms with in excess of 200 plants.”

A spokesman for the service added: “Crews were called to the scene of a severe fire involving the first and second floors of a three-storey mid-terrace property.

“We requested the attendance of a power company to isolate electricity to the property. Crews are also checking neighbouring houses. West Midlands Police officers were in attendance.”
