Pentagon Asked About Risks of China’s Role in Drug Supply Chain

A bipartisan group of senators including presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren asked Pentagon chief Mark Esper about the potential national security risks posed by what they described as the U.S. reliance on Chinese pharmaceutical products.

  • China dominates the market for active pharmaceutical ingredients, which are used in generic drugs and vaccines, Democrats Warren and Tim Kaine along with Republicans Tom Cotton and Mitt Romney say in a Dec. 5 letter to Esper
  • “It is essential the United States develop strategies to avoid over- or sole-reliance on China for its critical drugs and drug ingredients,” the lawmakers say
