Plastic drum catches fire at Post Foods factory

Battle Creek fire crews responded to a plastic drum fire at the Post Foods factory Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021.

In a written statement, they said the factory’s sprinkler system had already put out the fire by the time they got there.

Around 5:02 a.m., crews from the Battle Creek Fire Department were sent to Post Foods on Cliff Street.

When they arrived, they found the 55-gallon drum in the basement, along with smoke in the area.

After investigating, fire crews said the fire was caused by an overheated motor connected to the drum, which was used to siphon product so it could be cleaned.

The fire didn’t leave the area of the drum. Fire crews said there were no injuries.
