Sri Lankan fruit and veg producers and exporters commit to modernisation project

Sri Lanka’s fruit and vegetable producers and exporters have committed to a World Bank supported project to modernize the nation’s export cultivation of banana, papaya, pineapple and white guava. The Agriculture Sector Modernisation Project (ASMP) of the Ministry of Agriculture aims to expand fruit and vegetable production with a focus on exports. Commercial estates will be set up by commercial growers and know-how will be passed to contracted farmers.

The Lanka Fruit and Vegetable Producers, Processors and Exporters Association (LFVPPEA) will join the project, wherein modern pack houses will be set up to improve product quality and reduce post-harvest losses in the chosen fruits in districts where the project is running.

As reported on economynext.com, the LFVPPEA will link the producers with international buyers and exports will be done by sea freight.
