Threat to supplies as shipping costs soar

Consumers are facing shortages of products from furniture to car tyres – along with higher prices – as shipping rates from China to Europe rocket because of the pandemic, an Irish freight forwarder has warned.

hat’s not the only example, with another freight company boss saying the cost of importing goods from the UK to Ireland has doubled in recent weeks, with the increased overheads almost certain to eventually hit shoppers and sectors including construction.

Garrett O’Brien, the owner of AirOcean Ireland, said that the price of shipping a 40ft container from China to Europe has jumped from about $1,750 (€1,440) in July to $8,500 now. And even if importers are willing to pay the huge fees, ships are so full that space often can’t be found on vessels.
