Asheville factory’s ultra-low temperature freezers in high demand

A factory in Asheville says it’s facing unprecedented demand. The Thermo Fisher Scientific plant produces ultra-low temperature freezers. The plant’s vice president of operations Michael Meguiar said it’s the type of freezer that will be needed to store certain coronavirus vaccines.Meguiar said the plant started ramping up during the summer in preparation for the demand. He noted the plant is getting orders from all over including internationally. “From small privately owned health care organizations to large distribution companies,” said Meguiar. Meguiar shared the storage capacity of the freezers.”Our smallest ultra-low temperature freezer can store up to 5,000 vaccines and our largest up to 300,000,” said Meguiar. WYFF News 4 saw freezers at the plant at temperatures as low as negative 94 degrees Celsius. That’s the equivalent to negative 137.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
