Baltic index hits one-week low on weaker vessel rates

The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index fell to a one-week low on Wednesday as rates dropped across all vessel segments.

The capesize index edged down 1 point to a one-week trough of 1,486.

Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were down by $10 to $12,322.

The panamax index fell 31 points, or 2.2%, to 1,379, its lowest since Nov. 20.

Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 tonnes to 70,000 tonnes, declined $286 to $12,407.

The supramax index dipped by 1 point to 1,019.
