Letters: Organ procurement organizations are in need of serious reforms to save lives and prevent abuses

OPOs, which operate as geographic monopolies, are charged with coordinating organ recovery from deceased donors. But as monopolies, if an OPO is poorly managed, that area of the country is saddled with bad performance, which falls disproportionately on people of color. That means fewer organs are recovered, which means fewer recipients receive transplants, which means we all attend more funerals.
