‘Disaster management must change’: royal commission urges

“Natural disasters are expected to become more complex, more unpredictable, and more difficult to manage. We are likely to see more compounding disasters on a national scale with far-reaching consequences.”

Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud indicated in principle acceptance of the 80 recommendations and said cabinet would consider the report’s 14 recommendations directly related to the federal government as early as next week.

“It’s important to understand that out of this report, the government
intends to work collaboratively with the states,” he said.

“This is not just the federal government ‘s royal commission, is one at the states have signed up to well.”

Mr Littleproud said the proposed extra role for the federal government was aimed at supplement state efforts.

“I must reiterate is not about the Federal Government coming in to take over
and fight fires, the states are the best ones to do that and they are
the professionals on the ground who are trained meticulously,” he said.

The royal commission was called after last summer’s bushfires, which ravaged much of the eastern seaboard and left 33 people.
