A Fairfield High Preparatory School student is facing criminal charges after a “fruity” cereal concoction she brought to school sickened six students.
The ordeal began about 11:30 a.m. when a female student began to convulse while in class. She was taken to the hospital by paramedics, said Fairfield City Schools spokeswoman Jennifer Gonsoulin. The student was stable before she was taken to the hospital and has now been treated and released.
A couple of hours later, two other students began acting unusual and their parents were called. The parents, Gonsoulin said, also took them for medical treatment. Three others became ill, as well.
School officials and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies immediately began to investigate. They learned a female student had brought the cereal concoction from home and distributed it to other students.
She was arrested on a charge of distribution of a controlled substance. Gonsoulin said school officials don’t yet know the identity of that substance.
Gonsoulin called the incident “alarming.”
“It’s eye-opening for the school, but also hopefully for parents and students to be aware of what they are putting in their mouths,’’ she said. “The school tries to provide a safe environment for all students.”
She said principal Dr. Terrell Davis will be going to classrooms in the near future to further discuss safety precautions.
